With a busy year ahead, Kal Penn will next star opposite Tyler Labine in Hulu's original comedy series "Deadbeat," premiering in April. He is currently in production on the ABC series "Designated Survivor," a conspiracy thriller in which a low-ranking cabinet member becomes President of the United States. Penn will star opposite Kiefer Sutherland in the series, on which he also serves as government consultant. Next up, he will return as host of "Superhuman," Fox's competition series that has been picked up for an 8-episode run, following a 2-hour special that aired this past January.
Kal Penn is known for his starring roles in "House," How I Met Your Mother," and, of course, the "Harold and Kumar" franchise, among many other studio and independent films and television series. Notably, The New York Times called his lead role in Mira Nair's The Namesake a "crackling, star-making performance." He recently completed production on several independent films including, "Sisterhood of Night", "Outliving Emily", "The Layover" and "Stereotypically You."
From 2009 to 2011, Penn took a sabbatical from acting, and served as an Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, where he focused primarilyon outreach related to Young Americans, including related issues such as the Affordable Care Act, repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and veterans benefits for service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Originally from New Jersey, Penn received his undergraduate degree in Sociology, Theater, Film, and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a graduate certificate in International Security from Stanford University. Penn has taught courses at the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
